I've been thinking for a while that new positions could be a way to spice up tactics and provide a lot more variety to the game. Got a few ideas, as below (including positional stats) - please let me know what you all think. Could be a way of integrating 442 diamond formations, 532's, etc.
Have also included the 2 letter codes for turnsheet inputting in brackets.
Right/Left Wingback - (R/LD) - Main attributes could be Speed, Passing and Thinking (to know when to attack and when to hold back). Would open up the possibility of possibility of playing a proper 532, or playing a narrow midfield and still playing a wider style.
Libero - (LO) - Speed, Passing and Thinking. An offensive defender that steps out of the back 4 or 5 and plays offensive passes.
Playmaker (PM) - Could just replace the existing Midfield General - essentialy a name change to bring things more up to date. Same stats of Control, Passing and Thinking as they are the ones who will dictate the play.
Box-to-Box midfielder (BB) - Replacing the midfield dynamo, needing Passing, Shooting and Thinking and having more of an impact on the game all over the pitch. The dynamo is currently a bit of a grey area, I mean, what is his actual job? Does he sit behind the striker, or is he a box to box man? This clears up, and makes it the role it was maybe meant to be - probably with more fitting attributes.
Attacking Midfielder (OM) - Sits in front of your main midfield and just off the front man, but is still classed as a midfielder. This will allow teams to play a 451 (R/LM, OM, AM, then PM or BB), or a diamond with the OM at the tip behind a front two. The attributes could be something like Speed, Shooting and Thinking as his main aim is to get in the box like Lampard in his prime - alternatively something like Speed, Passing and Shooting could also work.
A merging of the existing Target Man or Centre Forward - maybe keep the target man name and code, but change it to Heading, Shooting and Control. - Obviously works better with wingers or wide midfielders in the team, or top quality wing backs.
Number 10 (NT) - The attackers version of the Attacking Midfielder. This player sits just behind the striker and is there to help dictate the play, create chances and take opportunities for themselves by getting in to the box. Generally carried by the rest of the team, but have a huge influence when played correctly - unlikely to be paired with an OM for fear of them getting in each others way - can however play in a 433 with a TM and ST with Wing backs in a new formation idea, or maybe even a 523 or 343?! - Passing, Shooting, Thinking.
Hopefully this will make some players' attributes a bit more effective and help them in to more like the roles they have in real life.
Let me know what you think, cheers.
