Newcastle United have reclaimed the top spot in the British premier division following a 3-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox. This was a comfortable win for the geordies, who went top due to Lea Town's first competitive defeat at the hands of Chelsea, with Damien Duff notching the only goal of the game after 41 minutes.
Newcastle United manager Luke Deveney was quoted as being 'delighted' at going back to the top of the table, but was not allowing his side to get complacent. He had this to say about the title challenge:
' I am understandably delighted at going back to the top of the league, but me and the lads are completely focused on the job ahead and are not by any means getting carried away after overtaking Lea Town in the league. I have massive respect for Town's manager John Wilson and the top class side he has asssembled, and i am sure the next time we meet it will be a top class game.'
When asked at the same interview how he felt about last season's champions Manchester United's start to the season,he said:
'im sure Mr Keyte will admit that his side havent had a great start to the season, but in my opinion he will quite comfortably turn this period around and get his side right up the table. I mean, if you have players like Essien, Kaka, Ferdinand and Ji Sung they will eventually start to gel and make United into a side that can win the league once again.'
On the transfer market this week Newcastle have sold Matias Almeyda,Cristiano Zanetti, Nasa, Par Zetterburg, Steffen Freund, Amaral and Roy Keane, bringing in around 12 million pounds. Deveney also brought in one player ,with Norwegian attacker Emil Hallfredss joining for 1 million pounds.
Newcastle United are also competing in the Super Cup final this week against spanish giants Barcelona. they are also in the quarter finals of the League Cup in the coming week.
